In the United States, there are approximately 400,600 children in foster care. While many of their essential needs are met, a majority of the nonessential needs are not. That is where One Simple Wish comes in. One Simple Wish is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that empowers everyone to brighten the lives of foster children and those in need of one simple wish at a time.
This organization is such an inspiration to everyone. Basically, they ask foster children what their needs are and ask for donors to fulfill these needs. One foster child, Ronal Henning, wanted a suit so he could attend a relative’s funeral and not feel out of place. While his social worker could not justify this expense as an essential need, One Simple Wish could justify it as a nonessential need. A generous donor bought Ronald a custom-fitted suit and he was able to attend the funeral without feeling embarrassed. These wishes aren’t always essential to these foster children’s well-being, but they do give them hope. Hope that someone out there does care about them.
“There are thousands of children in the foster-care system who go without those normal childhood experiences that many of us have had,” said Gletow, who started One Simple Wish. “These kids are separated from their parents. They’re separated from their siblings. They really don’t have people to ask. … A lot of them decide that it’s not worth wishing anymore because it isn’t going to happen.”
